About the XRF-9700 STARFISH Bulk EDXRF Spectrometer
The XRF-9700 STARFISH is a universal benchtop X-ray fluorescence spectrometer that provides non-destructive elemental analysis of various samples. It is a bulk EDXRF instrument with an SDD detector (resolution < 127 eV) that can be used both in research projects and in industry, and Multiflo Instruments supplies it for cement, minerals and ores, geology, biology, forensics and mining.
In just one measurement the spectrometer delivers concentrations for all elements from C to Fm in the range of 100 % down to 1 ppm, and the results of the preliminary quantitative analysis are ready in 5 seconds. For the best performance on light elements, liquid and dusty samples are analyzed under helium, while solids are analyzed under vacuum. With the fundamental parameter method, no reference materials are needed for semi-quantitative analysis, so unknown samples can be analyzed without calibration.
A 50 W X-ray tube with air cooling is combined with a 10-position filter wheel that installs one of the primary X-ray filters automatically to mitigate the impact of matrix elements and the background components, and with automatic collimation from 0.5 to 15 mm. A three-axis manipulator analyzes up to 144 samples without operator intervention, the qualitative results are displayed automatically on the spectrum, and serial samples are quantified according to previously saved techniques. A video camera with additional illumination controls the precision of sample positioning.
Spectrum processing includes filtration, normalization, subtraction, a spiking test, account of the mutual influence of elements and regression graphic charts. The smaller XRF-9710 PEARL is the compact, more economical of the two bulk EDXRF models; they are compared below.
